Working with Khafra - A Big Success

One of our most successful examples of working with a Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) is our relationship with Khafra Engineering Consultants, Inc. Our 50-50 joint venture, which began in 1990, operates and manages one of the largest water supply facilities in the Atlanta area on behalf of the Atlanta/Fulton County Water Resources Commission. We have been nationally recognized for our operating performance.

The mentor-protégé approach provides businesses with the opportunity to learn and grow by working in partnership with a larger company. Our relationship with Khafra has helped their company tap into Veolia Water's technical and management resources and develop the expertise needed to successfully bid on other engineering, construction and operations projects in the nation and around the world. In fact, Khafra is now one of the most successful minority-owned engineering firms in the Southeast United States.

Val Bates & Jim KeeneVal Bates, president of Khafra (pictured left), has also worked with Veolia Water in recruiting other companies. As part of a team that successfully bid a project to manage water resources for the citizens of Indianapolis, Bates led outreach sessions educating local firms on the Veolia Water procurement process.

"Working as a member of the Veolia Water team on the Indianapolis project afforded me the opportunity to assist minority and women-owned businesses in taking part in one of the largest public-private partnerships ever undertaken in the United States," says Bates. "It also allowed me the chance to show how our relationship with Veolia Water has assisted Khafra in becoming such a success."
